In the 1940´s, the North American woman, Zale Parry, being still a girl, started in the world of diving. This way, she became a pioneer woman of this activity, which allowed her to later develop as a photographer and as an underwater actress. Back then, it was strange to see a woman diving, in fact, diving itself was quite strange.
Long was Zale from imagining that diving would not only trap her, but also thousands of women around the world.
For example in Costa Rica, sports diving began in the late 1970s, but the proportion of divers was approximately 1 female per every 9 males. Today, these statistics have varied to such an extent that we receive students of both sexes almost equally; we had even give diving courses exclusively for women.
In 1993, we had the First Women’s Diving Instructor in Costa Rica, which we can very proudly say belongs to the Mundo Acuático’s family. Mayra Gutierrez, after a few years of working at our company, decided to go to Colombia, and after a few months, returned with her title as NAUI Instructor.
Given the increasing number of women divers during the last years, PADI has named the 20 of July, as: Diving Women’s World Day. That being the case, this year we decided to celebrate this date by doing what they love the most: Diving!!!
That day, a group of 20 mermaids, meet in the morning at Playas del Coco. There were lawyers, nurses, entrepreneurs, students, doctors… Obviously, although each one of them performs in different tasks at the professional level, there was one factor in common for all of them: They were all certified divers.
Twenty friends went in 2 boats to Virador, a beautiful location at the Golfo Papagayo, where we could see sharks, stingrays, eels, puffer fish and lots of other species that came to greet us! After a break at the surface, we dived again, this time at the point known as Meros, of equal characteristics as the previous place, but with less depth.
Once on the surface we went to share a rich lunch. This way, those who did not know each other very well, could get to know a little more about their new friends. Both at the boats and at lunch, everyone shared their own impressions of the adventure of diving, both in and out of Costa Rica.
It was very interesting to hear the experiences that each one had about the same diving spot. This clearly tells us that even if you go diving a hundred times at the same place, you can always find different scenarios, especially when it comes to marine life.
In the afternoon, the group dispersed a little, as some wanted to see the sunset, others preferred to rest and the most enthusiastic chose to do a night dive.
This weekend Mundo Acuático decided to dedicate it exclusively to women. Mayrita, the First Female Diving Instructor in Costa Rica, accompanied the group. The other diving guides were also women. The dives occurred without major inconvenience, since all divers behaved very well, regarding the rules established in the pre-diving talk.
In addition, we must said that all complied perfectly with one of the most important diving rules: they always kept close to their assigned companion.
Our respect and pride for those 20 women divers, who chose us to celebrate their day. Next year we will repeat this beautiful adventure, so stay tuned with our upcoming events on social media and on our website.
